Grounding Teenagers

Whose bright idea was that???? Sure we ground them and then all they can do is hang out with us??? I had to revoke Jessica's driving privileges for 3 days. So, who do you think is getting up to drive her to seminary??? That's right. Poor little ole me. Oh, what I suffer! :)

Hmmm... in the words of the only Missourian I know, "That just ain't right." Maybe Jessica should have to pay you for your time, since this is not supposed to be YOUR punishment or consequence or whatever you want to call it, but it IS, I think, supposed to make HER feel it where it hurts (the pocketbook usually gets me). Just a thought from a girl with no teenagers, just a couple of little ones that I can't even master potty-training with.
You're a great mom, and Jessica's going to turn out just fabulously. Hang in there.

I agree with Leslie. Trying to find a punishment that fits the crime and doesn't punish you is tricky. Let me know when you figure it out!

My mom hated to ground us and would choose an alternative whenever possible. She said it punished her as much (or more) than it punished her kids.

Teaching and training kids, and helping them learn to choose wisely, is really, REALLY difficult. For those of you with young kids, I'd say choose your family rules/consequences wisely because you are setting long-term precedents and then be consistent! For those of us with teens, sometimes all we can do is hold on tight through the emotional whirlwind and hope that what we taught them when they were young will eventually sink in...

Jessica is a wonderful, caring YW and she will eventually (hopefully?!) stop pushing the limits. Hold onto that, Maura. And remember, it's just 3 days of driving to seminary. Remember when it was every day or trying to carpool?! You can make it through these 3 days!

After all, we grew up and for the most part learned to acknowledge and appreciate our parents' efforts! We gotta believe our kids will eventually get there, too...

It could always be worse, like you being the next seminary teacher. Sorry I don't have any advice, and I really don't even want to start thinking about that next phase, I'm stuck on the potty training.

I don't think there is a punishment out there (for teenagers) that doesn't punish the mothers also. Sorry. All I can do is empathize. Hang in there!!
